A Los Fresnos man is facing federal charges after he was discovered with multiple duffel bags of cocaine during a traffic stop.

On Saturday, a deputy from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) made a traffic stop on a white-colored Ford Edge in San Benito. The driver of the vehicle, who was the sole occupant, was identified as Alfredo Balderas.

According to a federal complaint, Balderas did not have his driver’s license or vehicle registration in his possession.

“During the encounter, Balderas appeared nervous and gave inconsistent statements to the deputy regarding the vehicle’s ownership,” the complaint read.

The deputy noticed an open container inside the vehicle and asked Balderas to step out. When asked if there was anything inside the Ford Edge, Balderas admitted to the deputy that there was cocaine inside the vehicle.

After a positive alert from a K-9 officer, two large white commercial feed bags with silver tape, a gray duffel bag and a blue duffel bag were discovered in the trunk of the vehicle.

“All four bags contained bricks wrapped in red, green, or black tape, of which Balderas stated was cocaine,” the complaint read. “Balderas and the contents of the vehicle were taken into custody and transported to CCSO for interview and processing.”

A total of 70 bricks were found in the four bags, weighing 77.5 kilograms, and tested positive for cocaine.

Balderas was transported to the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito. He faces a charge of knowingly and intentionally possessing with intent to distribute 77.5 kilograms of cocaine.
